Animal trainers in Bikinis swim with Tigers

T.I.G.E.R.S - The Institute of Greatly Endangered and Rare Species, is an animal center in in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that features exotic animal performances in an open environment. It’s half open zoo, half circus, and has a focus on animal conservation. The animal actors and trainers from T.I.G.E.R.S have appeared on the Discovery Channel, Animal Planet and The Tonight Show.

'Tigers have a natural desire and ability to swim,' said Dr Bhagavan Antle, who set up the tiger pool at his animal park in South Carolina. Check out 10 more pics of Animal trainers in Bikinis swim with Tigers after the jump.

'It is rarely seen and we wanted to be able to present it to people so they could really
get the feel of that incredible beauty and grace that a tiger has in the water.

'Tigers have modified webbing between their toes that makes their feet like flippers and they are superior swimmers.

'There are other pictures out there of tigers underwater but people have never been able to get this close to a tiger because it is so dangerous,' said Dr Antle.

'These are the only shots I have ever seen where people are swimming with tigers like this.' Dr Antle has a 25-year career caring for threatened species and has about 200 animals in large enclosures at the TIGERS park. He said: 'I started swimming with tigers about 25 years ago.

We found that in the water people and tigers were on a more equal footing when the tiger was swimming around on the top.

'As they were floating around we could manipulate them more easily because they don't stand up on their back legs.

'When they are younger they love taking baths and then we slowly introduce them to the pool.'

Dr Antle and his animal-trainers give one-on-one tuition to each of the animals while they are in the water.

'These are hand-raised tigers,' he said.

'At the institute we feel that swimming with the big cats gives them a closer bond between the animal and their human companions.

'We will allow the tigers to swim with the handlers as they mature but we have to monitor each one on its own merits.'

Many of the animals are also trained actors and have appeared in advertisements and films including Forrest Gump and Ace Ventura.

dear g, why don't you go ahead and hang around a loose tiger if you're such a pinnacle of masculinity and strength? I'm certain you of all people don't need any methods of exerting control over a seven hundred pound animal that can quite easily kill you and is well aware of that fact. I'm sure you can handle it, big man!

Yeah, I'm pretty sure when it comes to human relationships with tigers, gender doesn't make too much of a difference.

Why are you forcing these poor animals to swim? they are CATS not FISH. If you cared about animal conservation you wouldn't be chaining these animals and taking them out of their natural habitat, to train them for your own economic gain. CIRCUS? FOCUS ON ANIMAL CONSERVATION? THAT'S A CONTRADICTION. You are cruel and these animals all looked DEPRESSED. This should be illegal. And why the hell would you be called 'animal trainers in BIKINIS'? Bikinis? have a little self respect.

So tell me iamnormal.
Just HOW do you force a tiger to do anything?
Star
written by Star , January 08, 2009
To iamnormal. Talk about a moron. You need to read a little about tigers. Tigers are naturally comfortable in water. AND, if there were in their natural habitat, they would be hunted. Asians use them for aphrodisiacs. They look healthy and happy.

Mr. Yknot - I thank you greatly. Upon first review of these images I had in fact missed the camel. After further investigation I was pleased to find multiple instances of the camel, one shot being a "twofer" if you will.

You are a good man Yknot, may god bless you and America!

written by abbynormal , January 10, 2009
why don't you all back up off iamnormal. he or she has a point; the words circus and animal conservation generally don't go together. maybe this place is okay (at least they didn't make them waterski), but maybe just maybe we should be a bit more skeptical? (i mean "T.I.G.E.R.S"?? sounds lame and fake.)

Nice "conservation". These poor animals are being paraded around for some hillbilly southerners to drink beer and watch. TITS AND TIGERS! PERFECT!

not perfect.

i've never seen conservationists put chains on the animals they were trying to conserve...
...
written by Nat , January 11, 2009
Ok, quit with the sexual references, it means you'll get laid later rather than sooner.

As for the tigers, until 'we' can obliterate hunting, tigers need to be in conservations because they'll be hunted to extintion. However, it isnt right that they're chained and leashed considering that a conservation would put the tigers back into the wild and they wont be able to protect themselves.

Also, advertising the bikinis kind of put the rest of us down.
Good Idea
written by Smarter Than You , January 13, 2009
Look, many of you are thinking that this is demeaning either to the animals or to women in general, but lets face it, I bet they make a lot of money to further their goals for conservation. This is because while some people will go to the park for the tigers or to help with conservation, lets face it, just as many, if not more, will go to the park for the girls. I bet the girls really don't care, because they get paid and the tigers have a home and a slightly larger chance at survival as a species.

A bunch of uninformed readers here.
INTERESTING..
written by VM , January 17, 2009
Ok I was reading some of the comments and I like the Idea of what they have going on. As to all the references about the chains.. Think of it like a leash on your dog.. you train your dog to respect you by starting them out on a leash. You do this to let them know that you are master, well isn't the chain the same thing.. I mean these animals are bigger than dogs, so a normal leash won't work. As far as the chicks in bikinis go.. Who Cares.. I agree that it is an advertisement thing, and if it helps save more tigers, so be it. As far as I see these animals need all the support they can get. And I adore these creature, and think anyone that is trying to help is a good person. So Lay off a little I mean what are you doing to help these animals? To the owner of the conservation: I think what you're doing is great, and keep going..
...
written by iamnormal , January 22, 2009
All I was doing was stating my opinion, after all, this is the reason why the comments section is here, right? no need for name calling Star. No I am not a moron. I am just concerned with the well being of these tigers. As for don, in regards to your lovely question "How do you force a tiger to do something?" Well we can all clearly see picture six.. THEY ARE USING CHAINS! and no i do not believe that it is the same when you chain your dog. you should ONLY chain your dog when you take it for a walk. This is only to ensure that your precious pooch does not end up roadkill. A dog is not a cat. A tiger is not a pet. It is a wild animal. However I fully appreciate the danger these animals are in their natural habitat, but rather than being performance animals, can't you just let them be? Yes they may like to swim, but who should say they have to?
Peace
Chains
written by Cera , January 25, 2009
I just wanted to throw a comment in here about the chains. Everyone on here keeps complaining about it and saying that they shouldn't chain the tigers. Obviously, these people know nothing or almost nothing about tigers. All zoos and conservation groups and anyone who knows anything about big cats knows that you chain them. You can't use webbing like with a dog, because they're so big that it won't work and if you don't chain them and something happens to where a tiger gets to rough or gets scared you have to be able to stop it somehow. This is not demeaning to the women either. They chose to wear the swimsuits (how else do you swim?) and probably wanted to show off their bodies a little since they knew that it would be photographed and published for people all over to see. You don't go into conservation for the money, you do it because you care. That's why these women chose to look their best. Wouldn't you?
.....
written by erika , April 26, 2009
Here's the thing these cats are huge. Assuming that even with the chain if these cats wanted to eat one of the girls in there tiny bikinis they could do it. So, squaking about them having a chain on like it's some fucking crime is stupid. A tiger will eat what the fuck it wants. For the assholes that are freaking out about animals in captivity...quit your god damn bitching. They are animals, most zoos and sanctuaries feed and water those animals better then what they would find in the wild....not to mention shelter and safety from other species and themselves. So shut up.
